Seven years ago my father-in-law and I worked side by side to build a home for my family. During the process, he taught me many skills of the woodworking trade. Once the house was finished, I was hooked! I wanted to keep working in the shop building and creating projects.
I am a full-time fire fighter and spend a lot of time in the shop on my days off. Turning pens has become my new woodworking hobby. I enjoy the entire process, especially selecting the type of wood. It is amazing to watch the pen transform from a block of wood into a beautiful, smooth writing instrument. It is especially fascinating to look at the pen before it is sanded, in its rough and unfinished condition, and then as it is sanded with precision, to watch it transform into something of beauty. The grain of the wood seems to "pop" once it has been sanded!
I love taking a piece of raw material and turning it into something useful that will stand the test of time.
